"Ah, you must have a great memory then?" Ruairi posed it as a question. "Wouldn't fancy being in your shoes, never seeing anything."

"Your whip? Does that mean you did it to yourself?" He wondered. "Don;t worry about the scars, they who that you're a tough nut."

"Oh, do they have names? And what's this guy like?" He motioned to the one he was petting, out of habit once more.

"I do, that way I would keep forgetting how the world is and keep taking out my blindfold to recognize people. I remember people's voice mainly, that's how I know who they are." she explained, scratching her neck slightly.

Galene remained silent, thinking if she should say yes. But that way, he would think she was some sort of masoquist. Instead, she shook her head. "No. Scars mark the memories in my body but it wasn't my doing..."

The snake smelled the air in delight. "That one is Muriel, they are all she's and that one is specially fond of men. She loves to be pet." Galene said with a small smile on her face.

"Yeah wouldn't want you to accidentally turn someone to stone in a memory slip," Ruairi jested.

"Well it still shows your toughitude! Scars are nothing to be ashamed of, it means you've been in lots of battles. Back home people respect the ones with the tons of scars, you should see the ones my da has! Uncountable!" Ruairi said excitedly thinking about his da. Tarlach Mac Duguann was a fierce warrior indeed with more scars than Ruairi could count. So more than ten...

"Murial, that's a right pretty name sweetie," Ruairi murmured, petting the thing under her chin. "Yeah, yeah, I love you too little reptile."

Galene blinked her eyes several times. He thought she had gotten those scars during a battle? Good for her, really good, she was now thanking the gods for Ruairí's dumbness and she even chuckled a bit "Yeah, yeah. At first it was a bit embarrassing so I kept hiding my scars... now I just don't care anymore.

"Well, scars can represent that you've been on a battle... or abuse." she almost whispered this last word, hoping he wouldn't hear it.

Muriel rubbed against his hand in delight and Galene smiled widely, even though she almost didn't want to. She was only demonstrating the state of the snake.

"What kind of weird place is this where they hide scars?" Ruairi said utterly confused. "Scars are to show how many battles you've been in! A man looks naked without scars I say."

"Whattaya say?" Ruairi asked, not having quite caught her last word.

"Ah pretty lassie," Ruairi said to Muriel. "Attached to an equally pretty lady, you're lucky to be attached to her head, and not the likes of that evil library lady, ya know that? Lucky indeed."

"Well, number 1 I'm not a man and number two, you don't know if I got these scars in a battle." she said and shook her head to Ruairí. "Nevermind, it's no big deal actually..."

"You mean Miss Sylipha? She's nice to me, but that's because we are gorgons... she's not very fond of men either but she's kind at heart... really." she said with a nod.

"Hm, I guess hu-man doesn't apply to you either..." he said, thinking deeply, though his form of 'deep thinking' may be a tad different than that of others. "But alright, if you say so. I still think your scars are cool though," he said in a soft almost grumbly voice.

"I've only seen her once, and she scared me right out! But then again, I don't go to the library often, can't read so what's the point?"

"Kind at heart? If you say so..." Ruairi did not believe.

Galene shrugged her shoulders and sighed heavily. "If you say so. Scars can be cool to you, to me they tell a story, just like the ones you have told me now." she said with a small smile.

"Well, Miss Sylipha is not very fond of men... she's worse then me." she tilted her head at his words "You don't know how to read? Then you don't know what you are missing... So many things!" she said with a bigger smile. She loved to read, to listen to the stories people had to tell her and to drink from a good source of knowledge.

"And she is. At least to me. I didn't say it applied to you."

But..." Ruairi struggled to find something that would actually make him sound mildly intelligent. "Those stories make you who you are, right?" He said it a bit insecurely. "So why would you be ashamed of them?"

"I'll take your word for that, I've not actually talked to her myself but she scared this poor dude rather badly..." He made a face. "Wouldn't fancy actually meeting her."

"Nah, can't read. We had no writings in my time, only symbols. It was a bit like our version of the written word, but mostly just reserved for religious purposes, and it's nowhere near those complex scribbles in those books of yours." He shrugged. "To be quite honest I probably wouldn't have the patience to read anyway."

Galene rolled her eyes and pinched the brigde of her nose, trying to assimilate the fact that Ruairí wasn't as smart as she wished he was. "Well, probably because I don't like the stories these scars tell me." she replied, kinda harsh on her tone to the male.

"Well, I wouldn't recommend you meeting her either. Male and not a gorgon? Not the perfect combo for Miss Sylipha." she said, twisting her mouth a bit.

"Well, you are seriously missing stuff. Books can make you smarter at least. And tell you all sort of stuff." she said, slightly curious about the type of writing Ruairí's people had. Symbols. Interesting, she thought, tapping her fingertips over her lips.

[Ruairí]

Ruairi rolled over onto his stomach and looked sideways at the Gorgon. "Like what?" he asked curiously, pretty much being as excited to hear a secret as a teenage girl at a slumber party. "Now you need to tell me toooo!"

"She terrifies me. I know you won't intentionally turn me to stone. Her, definitely not so sure," he shuddered at the thought. Evil Gorgon lady.

"Yeah, well, I was never taught to read hence I cannot read. Plus, I'm definitely smart enough without them!" He smiled but even that couldn't mask how unconvincing he was.

Galene looked at where Ruairí was supposed to be and raised an eyebrow "Why should I tell you? You are still going to believe they are battle scars." she growled lightly, not feeling completely comfortable.

She smirked a bit "Well, I believe that's indeed true. She will definitly turn you into stone. I believe you are lucky, then..." she said, shaking her head.

"Maybe I can teach you? If you are willing, that is."

[Ruairí]

"Of course not, if you tell me otherwise I will believe you," Ruairi said, slightly offended. "I may not be the smartest guy around," understatement of the century, but hey, at least he admitted it. "But I trust people with what they tell me. I was taught to, unless it's someone of a rival clan, believe in the best of people."

"But... but..." Ruairi protested. He'd long since come to terms with the fact that, unlike the vast majority of the Athenaeum folk, he couldn't read worth two pennies. That was alright with him since he was stronger than about half of the Warriors anyway. While they burried themselves in books and useless information he could easily just smash their brains in. WITH the book if need be.

"But you can't see!" He protested weakly.

Galene cleared her voice and sighed "Okay, but this does not leave this field. Only my mentor knows about this and it ain't pretty." she said, taking a deep breath and squeezing her hands together. "These scars were made by my dad with my own whip. When I went back home, tadaa, new fresh scars." she said with a sarcastic voice in the end. "He hits me. End of the story. That's why I don't like my scars."

"And no, I can see. I can read books perfectly well and you can definitly learn how to read." she insisted. "You are not smart but you aren't dumb either." she said.

[Ruairí]

"You know, what you just told me is incredibly vague," Ruairi said, raising an eyebrow. "I don't know anything about your past, so that really didn't make sense, you've got to tell me start to finish!"

"Wait, you think so?" His eyes brightened like a puppy that's just been praised. "Maybe... I'll give it a try, if only to know what book it is that I'm bashing people's brains out," he said with a laugh, referring to his previous thought. "But if it don't work it don't work, alright?"

Galene hit him on the top of his head, not too hard, quite pissed that she had to tell him the whole story. "Moron.... remember when I told you that I was a Winter baby? I was quite weak and my father didn't like it very much.... I survived it, although his physical abbuses." she squeezed her hands harder together. "As I grew, I wasn't the most normal gorgon... I loved the living creatures and spend time by the sea, soon meeting my.... dead lover. He didn't like it, took my whip and literally spank me until I bleed. He does not like me. Got it know, Ruairí?" she was almost begging to the gods that he had because she was feeling weak now.

Her smiled appeared lightly fainted and nodded her head "Of course, why not? And it's a deal, I won't pressure you but you can't give up that easily, okay?"

"Heeey, if you want to get physical that's is not the way to do it!" Ruairi cried but quickly, before she could do something worse than hit him, said," That's was a joke, I swear!"

His face fell when she told him the story. "Oh," was all he said for a little bit, taking it all in. "Ehm, alright, that's... oh..." Ruairi was at a loss of words, and he wasn't quite often. "Damnit, I'm not good at this kind of stuff," He swore quietly. "That... sucks."

"Alright, fine," Ruairi grumbled, hoping he wouldn't live to regret it later on.

Galene turned his head quickly to Ruaurí, her eyes burning behind the blindfold and stopped herself from hitting him again.

"Yes, that's right... it sucks. Are you happy now that you know the story?" she said with a bitter tone and looked away again, laying on the grass. She wasn't expecting any comfort from the ginger male but telling these kinds of things... only her mentor and 'stoney guy' knew about this. Her mother didn't know and she didn't have the courage to tell... she was too scared for that.
