Wake-up cries.

Wake-up cries.
Mnemosyne was not in a particularly pleasant mood. She had been woken up rather brutally by her daughter's crying, and in the middle of the night no less. Normally her slave, though she did prefer saying servant, took care of the little one-year-old girl, but the woman was sick and Mnemosyne didn't trust anyone since the incident when another servant had let Ilios slip into the dungeons. Ilios had come up alright, if not scared, but it had almost given Mnemosyne a heart attack with worry. If it hadn't been for Amaranth they might never have found him.
To further the complications, there was no more food for Calliope, and she was hungry. The cook usually prepared mixtures of milk and added ingredients for the little girl, but Mnemosyne had neglected to pick it up for the night, something her servants usually did. Taking care of her own daughter was harder than it looked.
And so she traversed down the stairs, hair loose and messy, simple white night-garnment on, baby Calliope on her hip, who stopped crying but muttered "Hungry," or a butchered form of such, every few minutes to which Mnemosyne gently shushed her.
When she got to the kitchen she gently set baby Calliope on one of the giant wooden counters and tried to remember which of the thousands of cupboards the cook kept the baby formula. This was so frustration! And by the time she'd opened and closed the third cupboard baby Calliope had started crying again. "shhhht, shhhhhht," Mnemosyne shushed, oh this was just her luck, she'd never forget the damned food again!

((Is it okay to reply to this xD, you can ignore it if you want))
"It's this one missy" A rough, sleep-deprived irish voice floated toward the mentor and Jack wandered over to the cupboards a lantern in hand. The soft orange glow illuminated the dark circles under his eyes and he stifled a yawn as he set down the light to reach up and retrieve the food the Mentor was looking for. "'Ere yer gan" He smiled lazily as he yawned into his hand. The guards would swap night-duties around..yeh, yeh he got it. OMG its the new guy lets make his new job as hellish as possible, give him the deadman shift...great. He would have cleared out the entire guardroom if it weren't for the fact, 1. He'd probably get his butt kicked off Athenaeum grounds and 2. The place was already strapped for guards enough as it was.
Turning to see the child, his smile maintained he rested himself against the counter and raised his eyebrows. "Now you behave fer yer ma' ye little tinker, can't ye see she's knackered, yer ganna drive her round the bend wi' all yer unearthly catawauling". Jack had always had a soft spot for kids but it was a small soft spot that was very hard to find and could be easily overridden by a number of things. It must be his fatherly tendencies that made him a little soft in the child department...he had had one himself.
"Now is there anything else yer be needing afore I gan off to ma bed?" He returned to the unknown tutor. He wouldn't really be going to bed, he'd be 'guarding the grounds' that's what the other guards had told him....What would he be protecting school grounds from....the carnivorous man-eating fairies!

"Ah Jack, you're a saving grace," Mnemosyne admitted with a relieved sigh. "You don't have fire magic do you? No I suppose not, being a Nereid. Ah she'll just have to make do with it being cold then," she smiled at baby Calliope who let out a delighted sound to Jack's voice, making grabby-hands at him.
"What are you doing out here so late Jack? On night shift?" She asked curiously. "Oh, if you want to you could go to bed of course, I wouldn't blame you at all." She raised herself to sit on the counter next to Calliope and opened the lid to the pot of babyfood.
