The Gravel Road

[Achlys Adonia Argyris]

Adonia stood alone in the music room, her violin in her hands, staring at a pieces of sheet music. Having discovered the fascinating and complex little piece in a dark corner of a cabinet gathering dust, she had carefully brushed it off and arranged the many pages on stands in a circle around her. There was no way she would have time to turn pages with this one.

She finally placed the violin on her shoulder and began to play, the notes falling from her fingers as easily as if they had come from her own voice. The song's pace grew more and more frantic as she continued to play on, the feverish melody mimicking the racing thoughts in her head.

Eos liked the Athenaeum. He liked any large place now-a-days. Because if you have room to walk you never look like you're pacing, even when you are.

Somehow he ended up near the music room. It seemed the place called him. Damn blood, he thought, meaning what ran through his veins and gave him his strange tendancies.

He heard a fast and dark melody, which only served to pull him closer to the room. From the open door he saw Addi, playing her violin. He smiled and leaning in the doorway closing his eyes and basking in the sound.

Addi continued to play, her eyes fixed on the sheet of music before her. There was something about this melody that spoke to her in a way that no music had before. It had such a sad sound to it, but such a fierce, determined pace to it not unlike the frantic spinning thoughts of one caught in a nightmare.

She poured everything she had into the piece, though she was only sight reading it. I may have to keep this piece she thought to herself as she played, her eyes misting ever slightly as she finished with a flourish, her back to the door and Eos, who she had not yet noticed due to her intense focus on the music in front of her.

Eos opened one eye and smiled once the music was done. He waited until he thought Adonia wasn't going to play anything else, then spoke.

"I'm proud of you Addi. That was... good," he said for lack of a better word. He wasn't going to launch into a description of just how good it was. For one he wasn't that kind of person, and two he didn't want to give the girl a big head.

Adonia turned around with a little gasp of surprise, smiling sheepishly at her teacher. "T-thank you sir.." she said, looking down at her feet, wiping her misty eyes a bit. "I-I just found it a few minutes ago and... it seemed like it was... meant for me almost." she said gathering up the sheets of paper with a fond look.

"No problem Addi. I'll always listen to your music as long as you want me to." He walked over and read some of the sheet music over her shoulder.

"I could have one better though" she sniffed, looking at a sheet somewhat skeptically before turning to smile at him. "But I am glad that the son of the music god finds my music listenable."

Eos sighed. Adonia was just clueless sometimes. But that's what made her cute. He glanced away and then back at the jumble of notes she was collecting.

"Adonia..." he started, going to tell her not to go around blurting that out, but hten not seeing a point in it.

Adonia heard him sigh and wondered what on earth could have.... "Oh my goodness... I-I'm sorry sir.." she gasped, the music falling from her hands to the floor. "Oh!" she bent down to collect them as they scattered about the floor. "I'm such an idiot sometimes.." she muttered, more to herself than to him. "Now that I've actually learned to talk around people I can't seem to keep my bloody mouth shut.."

"It's fine," he murmered as he bent down to help her collect the sheet music she had sent flying all over. As he stood he yawned. It had been a long day of teaching first years how to hold spears the right way. He glanced at the piano int he corner... wondering.

She looked at him with a grin. "A wee bit tired are we sir?" she said, turning a bit pink as she yawned as well. She'd had a rather lengthy day herself. Class after class and nearly beating herself with her whip again, topped off by her lengthy excursion through the music room.

She followed his gaze to the piano. "Would you play for me sir?" she asked.

"Yeah, I am," he admited.

Eos' face turned warm when Addi suggested he play, she didn't suggest she asked him to play... for her. He blinked a few times in silence, then went to sit down at on the piano bench, and waited for Addi to follow.

"Any requests?" he asked.

Adonia followed happilly. "Really? You'll play for me?" She bounced along behind him, standing by him as he sat. "I don't know much music.... but... if you could just play me something... pretty" she said, looking sheepish "You know... something like the pretty little tunes you played for Seti the-... the other day.."

"I don't really think those can be called... 'pretty'." he said stupidly of the songs that were born of a play called 'the miserables'. He stared at the keys in silence for a few seconds before he started to play something that he felt sounded similar to the songs Addi had liked. Requiem For a Dream... it was also just what he felt like at the moment.

Adonia closed her eyes as he played and let the music fill her. He truly was a wonderful pianist. Her hands twitched as she held her violin, but she did not want to break the spell cast by his music, so she set the violin on a nearby table, coming back to listen quietly so as not to disturb him as he played and watching hi hands as they moved across the keys.

Eos rubbed his eye and yawned again. Jeez, I'm getting old. He thoguth to himself, for being so tired in the middle of the day. He felt better after playing the song and wanted to play something else, but couldn't think of what. That was a good warm up... he smiled as he thought of a more modern song. It was something he had been forced to listen to over and over again by Alana, the little moster loved the song. He had memorized it before ever trying to play it on the piano.

Adonia giggled as she saw him yawn and listened as the music changed. Much to her surprise, the piece was a rather bouncy, flighty little tune that almost made er want to dance, though she didn't really know how.

Instead, however, she contented herself with bobbing back and forth a bit in time to the music... she wold make Jack teach her to dance another time.

"Uh... I feel like death," he grumbled, as he stood stretching out his shoulder. It had been bothering him that day.

"Are you all right sir?" Adonia asked, eying him with some concern. "I-Is it your shoulder?" she asked cautiously.

[Eos]

"Hm, yeah, and I'm exuasted," he said as he closed his eyes and leaned against the wall. He plopped down on the window seat, just needing to rest a second. Even though what he really needed was sleep. He had been depriving himself of it in a pathetic attemt to keep nightmares at bay.

"Exhausted?... Why are you so tired, sir?" she asked cocking her head and sitting next to him on the seat. "You haven't been overworking yourself have you?" she said, looking up at him.

[Eos]

"I haven't been sleeping well..." he told her. His head was resting against the wall, and he would have been content to fall asleep right there if he wasn't sure he would wake up in a cold sweat wishing he had never been born.

"Why not?" she asked yawning, her eyes looking a bit glassy as she leaned against the wall next to him.
