Masquerade research

[Achlys Adonia Argyris]

Adonia, having finally located the library quietly slipped between the rows of books. Being unable to read, she flipped through the pages looking for any pictures that could indicate a historical tome. She needed to find something about masquerades to use as a reference for her masquerade gown.

She could have asked the librarian, but something about the woman just screamed that she was not one to bother with trifles. Thus she continued flipping through book after book, pausing once to observe some pictures of beautiful water flowers and creatures, but finding nothing to help her design an appropriate masquerade dress. "If only I knew how to read" the siren moaned to herself.

Adena was reading in the library. She was quite late with everything, she had to find a reference for her dress, and practice for the Rituals and Temple works class. She finally found a book which seemed to be good, when she noticed a girl in the other brink of the bookstore.
"Hello..." she stepped closer.

"Oh!" Adonia froze in surprise, her hand in the process of reaching towards a random row of books. Dropping her hand back to her side, she turned to give a small nervous bow to the young lady addressing her (whom she assumed was a Lampad judging by the lantern she carried with her). "Hello there," she whispered, hoping the librarian's hearing wasn't keen enough to hear her.

"I see you have problems too with the dress for the Ball" Adena looked into Adonia's book. "Oh, by the way, I'm Adena, 2nd year warrior of Hera" she introduced herself. This girl seemed to have a familiar aura; she liked that. She turned a page in her book, maybe she could find something good, but nothing was good enough yet.

"I'm Adonia -- 3rd year warrior for Hera," the siren said, smiling.
"Er yes" She continued smiling sheepishly. "I've never been to a party or ball of any sort so I figure I should try to do some research before I design or make anything," She said flipping through the pages of an illustrated historical volume bound in red leather. "It would probably be easier if I could read though," she finished placing the book back in its slot amongst the dusty tomes with a sigh.
She had already gone through several books of clothing and gowns and now had at least an idea of what the gown should look like, but had no theme to center the design around.

Adena nodded. An other warrior of Hera, that explained everything.
"Look," she started "the only thing is that you have to got an enough powerful aura. I eliminate the main problems. The dress is just a adornment on you." She tuned back some pages in her book. She saw a dress which might interest Adonia.
"Hey, what do you think about this one?" she showed her the full colored page.

Adonia looked down at the page revealing a exquisite gown with remarkable attention to detail and her eye lit up. "Actually," she said heading back to the bookshelves excitedly to pull out the book she had just put away. "That one would be perfect if I could just figure out a theme for it and combine it with this-" She stopped mid-sentence, for as she pulled the book from it spot on the shelf, the book next to it fell out onto the floor with a bang.
Adonia froze, listening and looking for any sign of the librarian. Finding no indication the Gorgon had heard the bang, she stooped down to pick up the book. "Sorry, sorry.." she hissed. "I need to be more care....ful..." She psnatched up the fallen book and examined the page closely. It had fallen open to a full page illustration of a brightly colored firebird (Phoenix), its wings spread in flight.
"Adena!" she whispered excitedly. "I can't read it.... can you tel me what this creature is called?"

Adena looked out from the hide of the bookshelf. This was quite close.
She looked to the picture. A phoenix... the golden red bird of the fires.
"It's called the phoenix. It's the symbol of rebirth." She looked closer. "Would you like to use that? Because if yes, then come, let's do it" And she stepped to the closest table, and searched for a pergamen and two plume, one of them she gave to Adonia.
"It sais that it take's usually read and gold colors, and of course as it's it's symbol, when it should die, it burn, and reborn from it's ash."

"Excellent!" The siren whispered excitedly, taking the plume, opening the three books they had collected and beginning to sketch. "The skirt definitely needs to have at least three layers to it.." she muttered as she sketched. "As for colors... I need reds, golds, and possibly a mild form of orange..."

Adena nodded. "But probably if you would use a little blue for the corset, then it would be even better." She pointed to the sketch, then for few minutes she watched the other plume moving up and down on the paper. After she took her fire and made little fire balls from it. "What kind of mask do you want?" she asked while she didn't took away her look.

"Blue for the corset would be perfect!" Adonia said grinning broadly. "I can use my own scales for that actually.Hmmmmm... as far as a mask, I guess something that resembles flames" she replied after a moment of though. "Maybe with a mild "V" shape on the nose and winglike flames on the outside edges?" she continued motioning with her hands across her face in an attempt to illustrate what she meant.

Adena looked to Adonia's sketch. "Hm..." she thought for a moment. She suddenly put back the little green fireballs to her lamp. She took her plume, and pointed to the picture "Yes, it would be really good" and she sketched it to the paper before they forget it. "You could also do something with your wings. I don't mean that there's any problem with, just for example you could do something more phoenix-like" she looked to Adonia. If they finish to discuss that then they almost finished her dress. And that was quite fast. But she, Adena still didn't even have a plan.

"oh that's perfect!" Adonia exclaimed as Adena sketched a mask onto the figure in the picture. The siren looked back at her wings thoughtful. "You're right" she said twitching them a bit. "I should make covers for them." And with that, she finished the sketch with a flourish. "now what about you?" Adonia asked with a sly grin, "do you have your dress yet?"

"No" Adena said. She didn't even had an idea how Adonia knew what she just thought about "I mainly came to the library to find something for the ball. And for the Rituals and Temple work class too. Wait for a minute." She stood up, and went to a bookstore where there were books about costumes. She came back with a half-dozen of books.
"If there's nothing in these, then it's really hopeless"

"I thought so" Adonia said with a sympathetic grin. "I saw that you seemed a bit sad, so I thought perhaps you had not found a design to your liking yet." Upon seeing the large pile of books, Adonia grinned widely. "Perfect!" she exclaimed picking one up and rifling through it at random. "First of all, is there any particular theme ... such as a person/character, creature, flower, element that you would like to use for your costume?"

"I didn't really thought about that" Adena sad in a confused voice. She didn't wanted anything particular at all, a simple ball dress, which would be enough good to a warrior of Hera, but not too conspicuous.

"I think, i just would like a simple venetian dress" she answered, and opened a book. After turning few pages she stopped at a picture. It seemed to be good enough, of course with color and some style changes.

Adonia saw Adena linger over a particular picture in the book he was holding and peered over her shoulder to see the design on the page. "What about that one right there?" Adonia said slyly pointing to the design. "Thi woul be lovely on you!"

Adena looked on the picture. "Right, then."

She took an other pergamen and started to make a sketch. There were a corset, and a big part of skirt. "I need two part" she whispered. When she finished it, she asked Adonia "What do you think, will I need a bow in the back? And i should decorate it with something. Probably flowers, or pearls."

"Its beautiful!" Adonia said. "Hmmmm as far as embellishment... whether or not it should have a bow depends on you personal taste, but as far as trim, I would go with pearls and possibly a flower for your hair. I think that would look very elegant."

"Okay..." Adena mumbled. She draw a bow and many little pearls too every side of the dress. It was almost finish there were one thing left.

"And the mask?" she asked "I need to find a refenrance!" and she opened a book in the middle.

"Well lets see" Adonia mused, flipping through books for ideas. "There are masks that cover the top of the face, some that cover all but the mouth and eyes, some that you hold on, some that stay on by themselves, some that cover half the face, some that cover the forehead and half the face, some that cover the mouth and one half of the face.... the possibilities are endless really..."
